Diversion #45 - Ii Kibarashi - Dance With Me

Wufei grumbled to himself as he watched the Banshee dancing. No one was anywhere near him. This was their usual club; the regulars knew better than to try to get all up on Duo, even if Heero wasn't right there. You never knew when he might show up, and he took a dim view of anyone, male or female, Human or not, being that intimate with his Chosen.

So Duo danced alone tonight.

Wufei glared around the club. Trowa toyed with his drink, speaking quietly with Tiffany. Inazuma and Enrique were dancing close and slow, totally oblivious to the music. Q was again flirting with the ebony-eyed bartender. Moira had drifted off to a group of young Witches and their laughter carried occasionally across the noisy room.

But Duo danced alone.

The Banshee loved to dance. When Heero was with them, he would spend the entire night on the dance floor, moving with the Wyvern as if seducing him all over again.

Duo was a social creature; it's why he enjoyed these outings. It didn't seem right that he should be alone on the dance floor.

Wufei grumbled into his glass again. Regardless of the fact that he, Chang Wufei, a Five-Toed Chinese Imperial Were-Dragon, a son of the Dragon of Heavenly Knowledge Clan, had missed out in the courtship of the Banshee, he was still, in spite of the fact that the obviously uncouth and less-noble Wyvern had gotten there first, a creature of honor. And right now his honor was poking him sharply in the ribs for sitting here slugging back these silly umbrella drinks while a fellow Dragon's (a lesser Dragon; true but still a Dragon) right and proper Chosen was left alone among barbarians.

He sighed heavily. Never mind that Duo had not returned or formally accepted Heero's suit; it was enough that he remained at Heero's side and in his bed. Never mind that Wufei never really got a fair chance to court Duo. Never mind that the considerable aesthetic appeal of a Five-Toed Chinese Imperial Were-Dragon could not compete with the magnificent and serviceable wings of a lowly Wyvern. Heero was indeed a Dragon, and as such, Wufei's honor demanded, with rather annoying jabs at his conscience as well, that he Take Action to remedy this situation. A Dragon's consort required a guardian. Never mind yet again that Duo was quite capable of defending himself against any of the Humans and Magical Creatures here tonight. It was not the reality; it was the thought that counted in these matters between Dragons. And Wufei was quite sure that if he were to have a consort to be left alone in his absence, Heero would be there as a guardian until Wufei's return.

It was just one of those annoying Dragon things.

Therefore, he stood up and drained his glass, thumping the heavy tumbler down on the coaster when empty, and stalked across the dance floor to where Duo swayed to the over-loud music.

"Duo," he said loudly to be heard over the music. The Banshee turned, wide-eyed and a bit hesitant, probably expecting to be told that it was time to leave. "May I dance with you?" Wufei asked politely with a small bow. "I know you would prefer Heero, but perhaps I would be an adequate replacement."

Duo grinned at him and reached for his shoulders. "I would love to have you dance with me," he laughed. "And you are not a replacement, since no one can ever replace Heero, but you can be a substitute, if you don't mind?"

"I do not mind at all." He placed his hands lightly on Duo's hips and fell into rhythm with him.
